When I was 10 or 11 years old I was watching a show on Swedish Television. There was this fantastic performance by Big Brother & The Holding Company doing a cover of Summertime. For some reason my parents talked and criticized the performance through the whole tune and I even missed who the band was. None of my friends at school had watch the program so no help there.
Jump to age 15 and I hear this voice on the radio. They are playing Janis Joplin’s last album, Pearl. I have found what I have been searching even if it was too late. There is however more recorded music at CBS with Janis Joplin and this is released over time. I also start to dig into BB&HC before Janis joined and after she left the group.
This weekend Sam Andrew passed away after a heart attack. Sam Andrew was a co-founder of the group and also the, maybe, more educated in musical theory of the band’s two guitarists. James Gurley and Sam Andrew were the guitar players in the band. James had a fatal heart attack in 2009. So today there is only drummer Dave Getz and the bass man Peter Albin left. Some of you might remember Janis Joplin. She was the band’s singer for two years and they rose to world fame together. Big Brother as a band has been on and of through the years. Janis died in 1970.
Listening tips. Try this for some early Big Brother, classical Norwegian composer Edward Grieg.
With Peter and Sam switching instruments and with Janis Joplin.
